Sony DSXS300BTX Report

Sony DSXS300BTX Review by M. Gibbs (Chicago, IL)

I've only had the S300BTX for a few days but I love it. I'm using it with an older iPod Classic 30GB and my Droid and it is exceeding my expectations. The interface for the iPod is amongst the best I've seen for a Single DIN receiver (Alpine is the only one I liked better) and the Tune Tray storage is awesome. It's like driving around with a 5000 song jukebox. The bluetooth functionality helps set this receiver apart both for excellent phone integration and for the A2DP media streaming.

I'm not an audiophile but, for my untrained ears, the sound is terrific. Far better than the OEM receiver that came with my Honda CR-V.

The only thing that is taking a while to adjust to is the control scheme. I think it's difficult to cover all of the control scenarios in a Single DIN and navigating the interface can be a little challenging. However, I already see that I'm adjusting and figuring out how to do things without looking at the screen.

Great product. I highly recommend it.

Sony DSXS300BTX Review by Sean Ormsby (Hixson, TN United States)

I have major problems with how Sony is marketing this unit versus the reality of it. I have always had Sony head units, and this is the first time I have ever written a bad review.

I have an iPhone 4. According to everything I have read on both Sony's site and retailers of this unit, it is iPhone compatible.... and it is.... to a point.

After receiving the unit and reading the manual I discovered that Sony warns not to put any cellular devices into the internal Tune Tray. Basically because you will lose your signal. OK, so now because my audio device and my cellular device are one and the same I can no longer use one of the main selling points of this unit.

Next I decided to set up the SensMe software on my PC. After going through the installation I hit a brick wall. Due to a combination of Apple's restrictions and/or Sony's inability to work with them on a solution, the iPhone is not compatible. So I lose yet another unique feature from this head unit.

After spending a total of about 1.5 hours with online chat support (don't bother) and phone support I have registered two complaints, not just about the lack of compatibility, but more so about the lack of documentation explaining such. Which is why I am writing this review and will post it everywhere i can so people will know what they are buying.

So, now I have to purchase a cable to run from my iPhone to the USB port on the outside of the head unit (the internal tune tray which I CAN'T use came with an adapter, but its only for use internally), purchase mounting hardware for the phone so that it doesn't roll around in my car (hence why I loved the idea of the Tune Tray) and I get to have wires hanging all over the place. Thanks Sony, you couldn't have placed some disclaimers, warnings, or notes somewhere in the features or specs of this unit?

On the upside the audio sounds great. Having the bluetooth and audio controls at my finger tips is really convenient. The idea behind the features is great and if you have separate audio and cell devices you wont have this problem, I just dislike the fact that I had no heads up on this. Hopefully this review will save someone the trouble. If you have concerns, do a web search and find the manual.

Update: So just as an informational update I decided (against the manufacturers recommendation)to try putting my iPhone into the Tune Tray. The only problems I have experienced are a slight loss of cell signal, some feedback in the speakers from time to time, intermittent connection problems between the iPhone and the small adapter that comes with the unit, and limited height space in the tray chamber.

For short trips under 20 minutes (to and from work, gym, to a friends house) it isn't worth the hassle for me to use the Tune Tray because of the case on my iPhone. It wont fit in the tray with the case on it, (I have a form fit leather case. A bumper case would probably fit though)so I have to remove it from the case, open the unit's face, bring out the tray, attach the cable, slide in the phone, recheck the cable for snugness, close the tray, close the face. Then store my case. Repeat the process in reverse when I reach my destination. So, its a bit of a hassle, not to mention the constant handling of a case-less iPhone 4 is a disaster waiting to happen (but that's an Apple issue!)

For longer trips it would definitely be useful, but many times on longer trips I would want to use the GPS app on my phone so I guess it depends on your situation. Personally I just use the external USB plug instead of the tune tray most of the time(I use the supplied adapter along with a USB extension cord to plug into the external port), but again it defeats the purpose of one of the key points of this head unit.

Sony DSXS300BTX Review by bcskelly

Awesome head unit. Makes my stock speakers in my RSX Type S sound so much better. Easy to use. Only complaint is the light around the knob is a little bright at night. Bluetooth works pretty well without accessory microphone. Can't really use it though with air blowing hard or windows down. I leave my iPod inside unless my car is sitting in sun. Streams from phone really well. No skips. Highly recommend. Knob controls fairly simple, but not always precise.
